How to Turn Off the Insert Key of the Keyboard on Windows 10

The Insert key on your keyboard can sometimes be very frustrating. When you tap it accidentally while working, it switches to Overtype mode, and then it can irritate you. Method 1: Turning off the Insert Key through Registry Editor

Let’s make it happen with the help of the Registry Editor. Keep in mind that it is an exceptionally powerful tool, and you can use it for various purposes. However, if you are not familiar with this tool, then don’t randomly click anywhere in the tool as it can cause fatal issues on your operating system.  So carefully read and follow the instructions mentioned here to disable Insert key:

  1. First and foremost, create a system restore point for safety precautions.
  2. Then tap the Start key on the keyboard to open the start menu.
  3. Once it appears, put in Regedit.
  4. Choose the best matching result or the uppermost result.
  5. Then, it will appear on the screen.
  6. On the left side, you will see a file navigator menu.
  7. Using that navigation menu, find and click on the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder. 
  8. Then, head to SYSTEM.
  9. After that, open the CurrentControlSet folder.
  10. Now press on the Control folder.
  11. Then go to the Keyboard Layout folder.
  12. Once you are inside the Keyboard Layout folder, find the Keyboard Layout folder in the left menu.
  13. Perform a right-click on it.
  14. Choose New, and then it will open a dropdown.
  15. There, you need to select the Binary Value option.
  16. Now name it as Insert Remap.
  17. Then make a double click on that.
  18. Next, copy and paste the “00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 00 00 52 E0 00 00 00 00” command inside the “Value data” text field. 
  19. Press OK and then close the wizard.

Now reboot the PC and see if the Insert key is still working or not. In case you are still seeing it working, it means you made some mistake while using the instructions mentioned above. Method 2: Disable Insert Key on Windows 10 through Registry Tool

  1. Open a web browser.
  2. Now copy this “https://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DisableInsertKey.zip” link.
  3. On your internet browser, locate the URL bar on the top.
  4. Then right-click on that.
  5. Choose the Paste option.
  6. Hit the Enter button on the keyboard.
  7. Now check the Downloads folder of your PC.
  8. Locate the “DisableInsertKey” zip file.
  9. Right-click on that and choose Extract Here.
  10. Then, double click on “DisableInsertKey.reg.”
  11. Choose the Yes option.
  12. Follow the instructions if there are any.
  13. Now reboot the computer and enjoy your work.
